From Geneva to the world: two intense days at the AI for Developing Countries Forum at the United Nations eft us with one powerful question to ponder: how can we use AI to create a fairer, more equitable world for developing nations?

The forum brought together policymakers, innovators, and thought leaders to share strategies. Our Irina Mefedova joined key conversations on public-private partnerships, exploring how these collaborations can drive meaningful impact. Done right, these partnerships can fast-track development while ensuring that AI solutions are tailored to the unique challenges faced by developing nations.

What stood out: key insights from Geneva Summit:

1) One of the central themes was building systems that include everyone, especially those often sidelined in the global tech race. From managing data flows to ensuring algorithmic fairness and equitable value distribution, the conversations emphasized empowering all stakeholders — not just the most privileged.

2) The discussions went beyond theory, diving into actionable strategies: how can developing nations build foundational infrastructure like computing power, storage, and networks? How can they adopt lightweight, environment-specific AI solutions that are effective and scalable?

3) A recurring theme was policy that keeps pace with technological change. How do we balance innovation with data sovereignty? The focus was on creating governance frameworks that can adapt to the rapid evolution of AI, especially in critical areas like healthcare, education, and finance.

4) Developing nations have a unique opportunity to lead in localized AI solutions. By leveraging open-source collaboration, fostering knowledge sharing, and aligning AI development with local cultures and contexts, they can chart new paths forward that benefit their communities while setting global examples.

5) One of the most engaging discussions centered around data collaboration: how to build mechanisms that are both efficient and trustworthy. The challenge? Striking the right balance between openness, which fosters innovation, and security, which protects sovereignty and privacy.

What’s next?

The conversations in Geneva are just the beginning. AI has the power to transform lives, but only if we work together — across borders, sectors, and disciplines — to ensure it does so fairly and responsibly. #AIFODGeneva2025
